Camp cooking: Looking for healthy choices?
June 26, 2009
Fresh air and outdoor adventures while camping provide a healthy dose of physical activity, but balancing this with healthy eating choices is sometimes a struggle.
Campfire s'mores and hot dogs are staples for most campers but there are healthier options. Before you leave, write out a menu and include fruits and veggies at every meal. This will help prevent you from making unhealthy choices.
Try these meal and snack ideas for your next camping trip.
A better dog: Instead of regular hot dogs, try turkey, vegetable, or tofu. They have much less fat and cholesterol.
Catch of the day: Grilled fish is an excellent choice when camping.
Plenty of fruit: Apples, oranges, pineapples, bananas, cantaloupe and watermelon are all great choices.
Homemade muffins: Great for breakfast and snacks, muffins don't require refrigeration or toasting.
Banana boat: Instead of the traditional s'mores try wrapping a small piece of dark chocolate, half a marshmallow and a banana in tinfoil. Roast this yummy treat over the fire and enjoy.
Locally grown produce: Fruit stands and farmers' markets pop up everywhere in the summer. Do some exploring and see what you can find. There is nothing like fresh, locally grown produce to satisfy your hunger while camping.
Keep water handy: Don't fall to the temptation of sugary soft drinks when a cold glass of water will do. Freeze bottles of water ahead of time which can double as ice for your cooler.
