Acute Care
Alberta Health Services offers a comprehensive range of acute care services across the province at 102 hospitals, and numerous emergency departments, urgent care centres and outpatient clinics. Acute and specialized care is available to all Albertans, regardless if your community has a hospital.
Acute care services provide necessary and active short term treatment of a serious injury or illness, an urgent medical condition, or during recovery from surgery. Care is provided by teams of health-care professionals skilled in a broad range of medical and surgical specialties. Treatment may require a short stay in an emergency or urgent care centre, admission to a hospital, the assistance of diagnostic services, surgery, or follow-up outpatient care in the community.
Emergency care
Emergency provides access for patients of all ages suffering from life threatening to minor conditions. Emergency is not a first-come, first-serve system. Critical patients are attended to first.
Hospitals
Hospitals treat sick and injured persons needing medical or surgical treatment and provide other health assessment and treatment services.
Urgent care centres
Medical facilities for people who have unexpected but not life-threatening health concerns that require same-day treatment. People with life-threatening conditions should go immediately to an Emergency Department or call 911.
