Be prepared for the worst
The need for robust emergency preparedness by health-care providers has been highlighted in recent years.
There are many actions Albertans can take to ensure we are prepared in case of emergency.
If an emergency happens in your community, it may take some time for help to reach you. You should be prepared to take care of yourself and your family for a minimum of 72 hours.
Every Alberta household needs an emergency plan. It will help you and your family know what to do in times of emergency.
Your family may not be together when an emergency occurs. Plan how to meet or how to contact one another, and discuss what you would do in different situations.
Developing an emergency preparedness plan for your workplace is also a smart idea.
In an emergency, you will need some basic supplies, including food, water and a wind-up flashlight. Remember, you may need to get by without power or tap water.
Keep your supplies organized and easy to find. You can store them in a kit that is easy to carry and somewhere everyone in the household knows to find it. Keep your kit in a backpack, duffle bag or suitcase with wheels, in an easy-to-reach, accessible place, such as your front-hall closet.
