AHS Organizational Structure

Alberta Health Services (AHS) is responsible for delivering health services to the 3.5 million people living in Alberta.

Alberta Health Services is governed by a board that is led by chair Ken Hughes and has 14 members. The board reports directly to the Minister of Health and Wellness.

Dr. Stephen Duckett, President and Chief Executive Officer of AHS, leads a staff of 90,000 caring and dedicated individuals who make up the AHS workforce. In this role he is leading health services through transformational change, shaping the future for AHS to allow achievement of the goals of access, quality and sustainability. He is also responsible to the Board for the organization's day-to-day operations.

Effective June 1, 2009, everyone in the organization will be reporting and accountable through a new organizational structure. A summary of these principles underlying the new formal structure and an explanation of some of the key features of the new structure are outlined in the summary document from Dr. Stephen Duckett entitled, New Organizational Structure Background. The new formal structure is but one step in the creation of Alberta Health Services. Far more important is the change in culture it supports:

• taking a provincial perspective on issues
• ensuring good ideas developed in one part of the province are shared across the province
• to exemplify every day, the four AHS values of respect, accountability, transparency and engagement.

Creating and embedding this culture will be a critical task for all leaders and staff in the organization.

• Corporate Services
• Senior Physician Executive
• Clinical Support Services
