Calling 911
It is important to note that the EMS transition to health and ongoing dispatch consolidation changes nothing for the public. If you need an ambulance, phone 9-1-1. The dispatch centre that used to take your call will still take your call. If the call taker determines an ambulance is required, they will patch in to the EMS dispatch centre and an ambulance will be sent.
- When you phone 9-1-1 you will access the 9-1-1 call answer service that serves the area you are calling from.
- The call taker will ask you what service you require (police, ambulance or fire).
- If you request an ambulance, the call taker will patch in to the Alberta Health Services Communications Centre (EMS dispatch) that serves the area you are calling from.
- Once your address and phone number is verified, an ambulance will be dispatched (along with other services that may be required such as fire or police).
- While the ambulance is en route, the call taker will stay on the phone with you to get more information. They may also provide instructions on how to assist with the medical emergency and prepare for the arrival of the ambulance.
- Depending on the nature of the emergency, the call taker may stay on the line with you until help arrives
